Only a Summer Thing

Dark of winter, couples splinter, people go their separate ways.
I miss the heat, your dancing beats, purple mountains, endless days.
We were nothing to each other, just a stop ‘long the way,
A little taste of summer comfort, a hillside fortress you could stay
But it’s only a summer thing, only a summer thing, only a summer thing
But it’s a part of me now.

Make believe we might have something, play the game, don’t get too close.
It works for me to have you free, better less than an overdose.
We were nothing to each other, you are just a puff of smoke,
Just another glass of bubbly, while you pinch another toke,
But it’s only a summer thing, only a summer thing, you’re only a summer thing
So far from me now.

I ought to know that we’re just two ships in the night
You’ve got to go, I’ve had more of your time than I might

Take the rest room by the guest room, walk on air, don’t leave a trace.
We’ll grill some fish and make a wish, and watch the stars fall into place.
We had something for a moment, just a little bit of fun
Spirits longing for diversion, dancing in the golden sun
It was only a summer thing, only a summer thing, only a summer thing
But it’s a part of me now.
